Etre et Avoir

This afternoon I found myself wanting to take a break from reading, so I decided to watch one of the documentary films I have out from the library, so I popped "To Be and To Have" (aka "Etre et Avoir") into the player.

The next two hours were spent in deep reflection.

The film follows a small one-room elementary school in rural France. One teacher and approximately 12 students, ranging from quite small to almost middle-school age. The day to day learning and interacting that goes on during the course of the film is quite precious to observe. Because the children are all different ages and the teacher is responsible for all of them, the children have become not only autonomous, but also how to be teachers for each other. Often the older children help the younger, etc...

In a country like ours, where the educational system needs to be completely torn down and rebuilt in a new way, it is a joy to see a film where the teacher cares for each of his students and has the time to devote to all of them. Despite some of the later controversy surrounding this documentary, I found it to be quite thought-provoking and inspiring.

As always, children give us a new perspective on all aspects of life and learning.

After reading your review, I borrowed it from the library and your uncle & I enjoyed watching it. I would guess that he enjoyed practicing his French more than anything, though. For me, I enjoyed observing the teacher's style. Later, I thought, "God's like that." Meaning, He's so patient and gives individual attention. It was worth watching, if only to see God better.

Glad you enjoyed it :-) There is so much to be taken from that film and to learn from it.
